There are a variety of different digestive system models that are perfect for a variety of teaching and patient consultation needs. Each one of the digestive system models offers enough detail for basic and advanced study and understanding; however some have special features that may make them a better option, depending on the specific type of professional or teaching needs.

A very popular option for both physician’s offices as well as teaching programs is the life sized digestive system models. The complete digestive system or just a specific part of the digestive system may be included within the model. A full sized, complete option for digestive system models is handy to have as it allows the patient or student to see all aspects of the system and how they interact with each other. These models typically include the nose, mouth and throat areas in a cross section, giving an open view into the internal structures in these areas, including the esophagus.

The GI tract, liver and gall bladder, pancreas and spleen are all included in these types of digestive system models and are located on the backboard mountings in their correct position in location to the other body systems. Typically the lower part of the digestive system models, including the rectum; caecum and duodenum are also open or cross-sectioned, allowing more visual aspects of these parts of the model. The transverse colon may also be fully removable, allowing unobstructed views of the rest of the digestive system. These types of very comprehensive digestive system models are ideal for teaching since they are full sized and also color coded for easy identification of the various parts of the system.

Specific parts of digestive system models are also available that are ideal for both physician and patient consultation as well as for teaching. Models that focus in on the stomach are essential for most doctors' offices since they allow the patient to actually see the structure of the stomach and how injury, disease or genetic issues may be causing symptoms. Typically these models are found in either two or three part options and are fully mounted on a stand for easy display. The two part models split down the middle of the stomach, allowing the patient or students to see into the organ itself. Blood vessels, nerves and structures are all clearly visible and highlighted in the model. Three part models typically include a removable esophagus that can be essential for having an enhanced view of the front part of the stomach and the esophagus itself.

For a doctor, digestive system models are also available that show ulcers in various stages within the stomach. These models are ideal for talking to patients about the most common type of digestive disorders diagnosed today. These models have a range of visual symptoms from a slight ulceration through to a complete perforation of the stomach wall. Additional digestive system models of diseases of the esophagus are also available for both teaching and medical offices.
