The purpose and function of the Nellcor Symphony N-3000 pulse oximeter is to continuously and noninvasively measure functional arterial oxygen saturation of arterial hemoglobin (SpO2) and pulse rate (measured by an SpO2 sensor). The monitor is intended for use on adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients in all hospital areas, hospital-type facilities, and home environments. It may be used during intra-hospital transport when powered by its internal battery. The N-3000 can operate as a standalone monitor or it can be connected to (stacked with) other Nellcor Symphony instruments, such as the N-3100 blood pressure monitor and N-3200 display/printer. When used with the N-3200 display/printer, the instruments can display and print out plethysmographic waveforms and SpO2 and pulse rate tabular data.

The Nellcor Symphony N-3200 display/printer prints and graphically displays data collected by other Nellcor Symphony instruments. The N-3200 is intended for use with adult, pediatric, or neonatal patients in all hospital areas and hospital-type facilities. The N-3200 is not intended to operate independently. It displays and prints waveforms, trends, and other data associated with a given parameter monitored by a Nellcor Symphony N-3000 patient monitor and/or a Nellcor Symphony N-3100 blood pressure monitor.

The measurement of cardiac output is accomplished by interpreting data collected by proprietary sensors that measure flow, airway pressure, and CO2 concentration, and then combining these signals to calculate CO2 elimination. Using these variables, a technique known as Fick partial rebreathing is applied to calculate cardiac output.
