In order for a patient to be properly sedated, the anesthetist must have trustworthy anesthesia equipment. There are many pieces which will be needed to complete an anesthesia machine, such as face masks, CO2 absorbers , and vaporizers. The  functioning of the anesthesia machine is in direct correlation to the ability of the  anesthesia equipment to perform.

 

Lengthening the life of the  anesthesia equipment is always a boon, since it will reduce the number of replacements which will have to be purchased. Regular cleaning and maintenance will keep the equipment operating at a prime level for the longest possible time. When cleaning, plastic, rubber, and neoprene can all be washed with soap and water, then allowed to air dry. Sterilization methods vary depending upon the materials. Plastic parts and pieces of  anesthesia equipment will melt or warp if they are subjected to high heat autoclaving. These pieces can be sterilized using the ethylene oxide gas method. This is also a preferred, cooler means of sterilizing rubber parts since high temperature autoclaving can shorten the life of latex, rubber, and neoprene products. If autoclaving latex and neoprene bags and tubes, they should not be sterilized longer than fifteen minutes at 250F. If there is a plug on a rubber masks, it needs to be taken off before it is autoclaved. The temperature should not exceed 250F.

 

The vaporizers act as a means of creating an aerosol from the sedation drugs. This mist is then fed into the oxygen line and delivered to the patient via the face masks. An in circuit vaporizers has a simple design. It is created to allow the anesthetist to insert the drugs via a needle into a port atop the unit. The drug is then delivered in a closed CO2 absorption or low flow circuit. CO2 absorbers are  anesthesia equipment which draw in the patient's exhalations and absorb them to prevent the patient rebreathing his exhalations.

 

All of the parts and pieces needed on a machine must be regularly checked for flaws. Ideally, this is done whenever the parts are cleaned or sterilized. The manufacturer of the equipment will always outline the best methods of cleaning for their products, and these suggestions should always be followed for the optimal operation of all the  anesthesia equipment.
