Cosmetic Lasers

Cosmetic lasers have multiple applications in the medical profession.  From removing warts and unwanted hair to skin resurfacing, cosmetic lasers have become a popular and reliable piece of medical equipment in today’s high-tech age.  In this article, we will briefly discuss a few of the cosmetic lasers in wide use today.

Alexandrite Cosmetic Laser

Alexandrite lasers can emit pulsed or continuous beams, depending on the type of source used.  They are principally used for hair removal, leg veins, pigmented lesions, and tattoos.

CO2 Cosmetic Laser

The carbon dioxide laser was one of the first lasers widely used by surgeons.  Unlike any other medical laser, its action on tissue is directly visible while being used.  It can be focused into a thin beam and used to cut like a scalpel or in a defocused mode to remove soft tissue.  This laser is principally used for cutting and removing soft tissue, removing warts and skin tags, and cosmetic resurfacing.

Copper Bromide Cosmetic Laser

These gas lasers produce a combination of green and yellow light.  They are principally used for treating vascular conditions.

Diode Cosmetic Laser

Diode lasers are small, reliable, and very powerful.  They are typically used for removing hair and treating leg veins.

KTP Cosmetic Laser

The potassium titanyl phosphate laser is most commonly used for removing vascular lesions, pigmented lesions, spider veins, leg veins, and port-wine stain.

Nd:YAG Cosmetic Laser

The pulsed neodymium: yttrium aluminum garnett laser has a high repetition rate and emits infrared and green light.  Though it is widely used for hair removal, it’s also a popular modality for treating leg veins.

Pulse Dye Cosmetic Laser

Dye lasers operate in both pulsed and continuous beam modes.  These lasers are typically used for removing vascular lesions, pigmented lesions, periorbital wrinkles, facial veins, rosacea, leg veins, port wine stain, scars, hemangiomas, stretch marks, and warts.

Q-Switched Nd:YAG Cosmetic Laser

Instead of using a partially reflective mirror that allows continuous emission of a distinct beam of light, Q-switch lasers use a flashlamp that release light into the laser chamber.  Q-Switched Nd:YAG lasers are used for removing tattoos, vascular and pigmented lesions, leg veins, and spider veins.

Ruby Cosmetic Laser

These lasers use a ruby crystal which emits a strong, very distinct red light.  These lasers are great for use on dark skin tones.  They are commonly used for removing vascular and pigmented lesions and also for hair removal in the Q-switched mode.

LEDs

Though not a laser, light emitting diodes are used to trigger natural intracellular photochemical processes which boost the body’s production of collagen.  They commonly used for skin rejuvenation, treating acne, and treating superficial wrinkles.

IPL

Intense pulse lights produce non-coherent, non-laser flash lamp light sources for skin rejuvenation, hair removal, treating leg veins and vascular conditions, as well as tattoo removal.

RF

Radio frequency treatment uses a form of electromagnetic energy very similar to microwaves.  During RF treatment, radio frequency passes electricity through the skin to heat tissue.  With a precise, controlled procedure, the tissue is actually damaged.  However, as is true with any injury to the skin, it will begin to produce collagen.  Over time this results in the tightening of the skin and an overall improvement in appearance.  RF treatment is typically used for skin tightening and hair removal.
