Surgical Curettes: Scraping or Debriding Tissue with Accuracy
Surgical curettes are used for surgical scraping or debriding of human tissue during a medical procedure. They are available in a variety of sizes, shapes and blade styles in order to accommodate specific medical procedures, such as removal of diseased bone or removal of tissue from the uterus.
Curettes for Specific Purposes
Surgical curettes are primarily used by surgeons and physicians in hospitals and clinics, and in physician offices. Selecting the correct curette for the procedure that will be performed is critical to providing high quality and precision patient care. Surgical curettes are classified by the part of the body or the type of tissue they are designed to accommodate.

There is an additional category of medical curettes used by dentists and dental surgeons to removed calculus from tooth surfaces or soft tissue of the periodontal pocket.
Curette Design
The design of the different curettes makes it easier for a physician to reach and remove targeted tissue. They are used to perform biopsies; remove diseased, necrotic or undesirable tissue; and treat conditions like impacted ear wax. Curettes have a handle and a tip configuration that is:
- Looped
- Scooped
- Hooked
The surgical curettes are also available in multiple sizes. Most curettes are stainless steel and can be sterilized and reused. There are also disposable curettes made out of polypropylene.
Additional Features to Consider
Some additional surgical curette features to consider include the following:
- Blade size
- Single or double ended blade
- Handle grip style
- Handle curvature
Handles are straight, angled or curved. Handle angles are available in a range of 15 to 120 degrees. Curves can be fully curved, slightly curved or have a small curve. The large variety of surgical curettes reflects the many procedures they are used for in the medical setting.
