Not everyone that uses a walker has limited mobility or doesn't necessarily want to travel and get out of the house and neighborhood. Traditional two, three and four wheeled walkers are great options, but they may be difficult to transport in a vehicle or on any type of public transportation. A great way to resolve this problem is to have a folding walker that is lightweight, easy to move and simple to pack in a car or carry onboard a bus, train or plane.

Folding walkers may also be rolling walkers, typically the four wheeled option are the most common. Two wheeled rolling walkers are also designed to be able to fold up for easy transportation and storage. These walkers, like the traditional two and four wheeled walkers include a variety of features.  Most will have a detachable or net type of basket or tote, designed to allow the user to carry a variety of items with them while keeping their hands free to operate the walker. Flip up seats are also possible with both of these types of walkers, a great way to provide a resting spot for those with mobility problems.

All folding walkers with wheels have the same standard safety and mobility features found in a traditional type of rolling walker. This means that they have larger wheels for even movement over indoor and outdoor surfaces as well as brakes that are controlled by the user through the hand grips. There are also locking features that can be engaged when the user is sitting or wishes to immobilize the walker for a specific reason. Brakes are released by releasing the lock, again done easily through the hand grip area.

A folding walker is easy for the individual to fold and assemble on their own. The folding mechanism has simple locks that are engaged when the walker is in use, and then flicked to allow the folding mechanism to compress into the folded position.  Some of the more basic models use a button mechanism to release the mechanism and allow the walker to be collapsed. When the walker is pushed back into the assembled position the buttons automatically lock into place.

Since many of the folding walkers are very lightweight and only used when an individual is traveling or for short term use, many individuals elect the non-wheeled type of folding walker. This walker is traditionally made of a lightweight yet very strong type of one inch anodized, extruded aluminum, which means it can hold up to 350 pounds, while itself just weighing approximately 6 pounds. In addition these types of walkers also have adjustments that can be made on the overall height and location of the cross support bar.

Most of the folding walker manufacturers do make different sizes for youth or adult users. Typically adult sizes are for individuals over five feet three inches, while the youth sizes are suitable for those four foot four to the five foot three height. Petite adults may be more comfortable in the youth sizes, while still not loosing durability and security in moving about.
