Unless you are wearing one of the nicest pairs of shoes or boots in your closet, the likelihood of you worrying about what gets on your shoes is pretty low.  Most of us don’t pay too much attention to what we step through, with some rather odoriferous exceptions.  However, there are some occupations that make keeping your feet and shoes or boots clean a high priority.  In some industrial facilities it is essential to wear boot covers to prevent any dust or other debris from the outside getting into the facility.  Of course, in the medical field, it is also sometimes necessary to ensure the cleanliness of certain environments.  In those cases, either disposable shoe covers or boot covers are needed.

Just like with many of the other medical supply items, boot covers can be found made in a variety of materials.  The two most popular are the polyethylene material and heavy duty latex construction.  The polyethylene boot covers are clear and usually have elastic or draw ties at the top to ensure that they stay on top of the boot snuggly.  They are perfect for use in hospitals, in industrial settings, for food service, or for use in sterile areas of livestock areas.  It’s important to note that these boot covers are for one time only use.  They simply aren’t designed to be used repeatedly.  Even if you tried to, the likely result would be holes in the boot cover that allowed for contamination.  Polyethylene boot covers come in convenient cases.  Typically, there are 25 pairs per box, and 10 boxes per case.  That brings the grand total up to 250 pairs of boot covers per case.

On the other hand, latex boot covers are very much like the gloves sold in most stores for doing dishes and other household tasks.  They are ideal for use in areas where the puncture risk is high.  Once again, industrial settings are the ideal places for this type of boot cover.  They would also be ideal for use in high contamination areas of hospitals or labs.  These thick, yellow boot covers might stand up to more than one use, but you will have to adequately evaluate each situation before you decide to give it a try.  The latex boot covers come with a handy traction feature that makes walking through water logged floors safer.  You can expect to find 50 pairs of these of boot covers per case.  They are also usually a little more expensive than the polyethylene boot covers per pair, though they are more durable.

When boot covers are needed in your line of work, it’s nice to know that options do exist.  Whether you are attempting to protect a sterile hospital or doctor’s office environment or are simply trying to prevent any cross contamination between buildings or sections of a facility, boot covers are sure to come in handy.  The right medical supply company is sure to have plenty of choices for you in both types of boot covers.
