If you are buying replacement equipment or setting up a new lab there are some must have components or features to the laboratory freezer that you are considering. Shopping different brands and styles of freezers will help you in actually seeing the different features available and determining which features are most important based on the types of storage that you need. However, regardless of the types of samples and materials that you will be keeping in the freezer it is still important to take a variety of different features into consideration.

One of the most important features of any type of laboratory freezer is the ability for the appliance to keep the temperature consistent. New advances in technology have provided the option for microprocessors to be used in adjusting the internal temperature of the freezer to keep it within just a few degrees of the set temperature point. This is particularly important in freezers that are used frequently where opening and closing the door could lead to dramatic temperature changes in the older styles of freezers. The microprocessors are build into the unit and work very much like the automatic monitoring function of a standard home freezer or refrigerator unit.

In addition to keeping the temperature very constant, usually within plus or minus 2.5 degrees Celsius, most of the new models of laboratory freezers also provide the option of a digital set point and temperature display. This means that using a simple digital pad users are able to key in the desired temperature and change it easy by either entering the desired temperature or using an arrow up or down type of controller. This provides instantaneous ability to set the standard temperature of the appliance. In addition to this digital set-point look for a model of laboratory freezer that also has a digital display of the actual temperature. This allows staff to quickly visually confirm that the temperature is correct and also to be able to keep track of any variances in the temperature. Some models are designed with dynamic convention to provide a uniform temperature throughout the freezer without the use of fans or blowers that may cause there to be cold or warmer areas within the freezer.

Another key consideration is the structure of the freezer itself. This includes both the size as well as the internal configuration of the specific model or models you are looking at. Many of the larger freezers will offer the great number of different internal configuration possibilities. These can include shelves that can be positioned to allow larger or smaller storage capacity; bins on the doors that can adjust to allow different sizes of containers, and even storage containers or drawer that provide the option to keep samples isolated within the freezer.

While there are many additional features offered in different models of laboratory freezers, checking out the three components mentioned above will ensure that you have an excellent piece of equipment for your lab, regardless of the type of samples you are handling.
