We are not aware of any odor issues with this product.  However, since some people are more sensitive to various odors, we can not guarantee that this product will pass your "smell test" (no pun intended).  Ultimately, the best way to find out is to try it out.

This unit folds along its length and can be set agains the wall.  Folded width is 10 inches.  We are adding an image of the folded parallel bars to the site now, so you can check it in a few minutes to see the folded version.
