Question
I had some blood work come back that said my alkaline phosphatase, ggt, ast, and alp all were high and they all deal with the liver. Should I be concerend? and what do these tests mean?
Answer
Dear Monica,
Thank you for the inquiry. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) (EC 3.1.3.1) is a hydrolase enzyme responsible for removing phosphate groups in the 5- and 3- positions from many types of molecules, including nucleotides, proteins, and alkaloids. The process of removing the phosphate group is called dephosphorylation. As the name suggests, alkaline phosphatases are most effective in an alkaline environment
In humans, alkaline phosphatase is present in all tissues throughout the entire body, but is particularly concentrated in liver, bile duct, kidney, bone, and the placenta
If it is unclear why alkaline phosphatase is elevated, isoenzyme studies using electrophoresis can confirm the source of the ALP. Heat stability also distinguishes bone and liver isoenzymes ("bone burns, liver lasts").
Question
I had test results from glucose come back staing it was invalid due to glycolysis. does this mean I could 35have diabetes or hpypoglycemia? what does this mean?
Answer
Dear Monica,
Thank you for the inquiry. In answer to your question to what glycolysis means, please see below.
You have a lack of oxygen in your blood that pervents sugar development. Glycolysis is the sequence of reactions that converts glucose into pyruvate with the concomitant production of a relatively small amount of ATP. Glycolysis can be carried out anerobically (in the absence of oxygen) and is thus an especially important pathway for organisms that can ferment sugars. Many people have the same diagnosis. You may want to consult with a microbologist for more information.
