I just wanted to make sure this can be a free standing cabinet and does not need to be mounted please.

Thank you for your inquiry.  This is a 5in deep cabinet.  Although it can stand against the wall, it is still recommended that it is mounted to keep it from typing over.  If you would like to provide us with some of your selection criteria we may be able to recommend other models as well.
